The earthquake has devastated the city and Central Christchurch has been deemed a state of emergency.
The Lyttelton is where the epicenter of hit hardest. So far the only report has been that the small town is now unlivable.
Aftershocks
Aftershocks are being felt and recorded within 5km of Lyttelton at a depth of 5km.There is devastation across the city. Both TV One and TV3 are broadcasting live from Christchurch.
The airport is closed for emergency flights only.
Multiple Fatalities in Christchurch Earthquake
There have been severe fatalities reported in several locations including two buses crushed by falling debris. Currently Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker is unable to put a figure as to the casualties.There are currently still people trapped in buildings and reports of a fire being fought by emergency services in Central Christchurch. Search and rescue services have been flown in from other parts of the countries.
Parliament has convened for an emergency meeting and the Prime Minister John Keys will be arriving in Christchurch by 5:30pm today. International services including Australia have been offered and the NZ Deputy Prime Minister Bill English has said the government will be accepting up specialty services in earthquake rescue. Japan has been mentioned by Bill English with their experience in Kobe.
TV3 have reported 24 people trapped in Forsyth building in Christchurch as the stairwell has collapsed.
